First, check with your local recycling service provider to confirm which waste streams are accepted and the condition the materials must be in for collection (for example, clean, dry, and free from contamination).

  • EIC and WasteXpert developed the WasteHub to be a central resouce for information about construction waste management in NZ. Although there is plenty of information available, it can be hard to locate, which led to the creation of this platform.
    The WasteHub includes links to existing resources, educational training videos and catalogues of common waste types and along with details on available recyclers in NZ.

    While the WasteHub currently focuses on plastic waste, it will soon expand to cover other construction materials such as timber, plasterboard and metals.

  • Currently, at least 50% of waste sent to NZ landfills comes from the Construction Industry (probably a lot more). Often construction waste is all mixed together and thrown into skips,  and then taken directly to landfill. This is an issue as many materials (some brand new) can be reused or repurposed in some way. Landfill space is also limited. We should aim to reduce, replace, reuse and recycle our waste before considering landfill as the last resort. By adopting a more circular approach, we can keep materials in circulation within the construction industry instead of using them once (or not at all) and discarding them.   • Yes, you can purchase your own bags or bins. Visit our Bags page for options, prices and contact details. We also provide downloadable signs that you can customise with your logo and print.

    Attach the sign to your bag or bin, and refer to our Plastic Waste Catalogue to determine which types of plastic go into each bin. Some waste companies provide bags and bins for you to use - please check with them directly. 

  • Some recyclers and waste providers provide site collection services. There are also some companies which can move your waste for a fee. If possible, consider moving your waste using existing transportation and choosing nearby recyclers to minimise your carbon footprint.

  • Different recyclers have different endpoints for plastic waste. Ideally, you should first try to reuse plastic waste—whether on your own site, through community centres, or at recovery centres.

    If reuse isn’t an option, the next best solution is to recycle the waste within New Zealand (when possible) to turn it back into construction materials. However, due to the limited capacity of NZ’s recycling industry and the growing demand for recycled plastic products, many recyclers still send plastics overseas for processing.
